By Kristine McGlinchey

There is no question about it – talent comes naturally to these heavy hitters of the cartoon industry. Cartoons are not only for children they can be enjoyed by people of all ages. We watched them when growing up, we attempted to draw our own resemblances and for those whose sketches looked anything like mine (stick figures), we admired the skill that went into creating them.

Check out the people that make stuff happen…

10. JoeCartoon

Who is this mysterious “Joe” the cartoonist who hides behind his eccentric comics filled with satiric humor? He is an “animator, beer and fishing enthusiast.” He also divulges, “I am just a guy in Michigan with nothing better to do than spill my twisted comic sensibility out onto the floor so that you might slip into the open elevator shaft of stupidity with me.” So take the plunge into his bizarre animated world.

JoeCartoon.atom.com

9. Keith Knight

Creating a niche for himself in the cartoon industry has not been hard for cartoonist Keith Knight whose style has been described as a cross between Calvin & Hobbes and underground comics. He infuses his work with urgency, edge, humor, satire, politics and race. He is also a part of hip-hop band Marginal Prophets and is not afraid to perform nude, (it was supposedly for charity). Knight has worked with MAD Magazine as well as L.A. Weekly and will continue to further his cartoons globally.

KChronicles.com

8. Gregory Titus

Drawing comes naturally to this sketch-obsessed illustrator. If he could (he might be able to) he would draw in his sleep! In addition to being passionate about his drawings he is a determined entrepreneur. His business endeavors include working on multiple children’s books and starting a clothing company. Although Greg Titus is focused and ambitious he admits, “I try not to think of it like a business all the time. You have to love it the same way you used to love it when you were a kid.”

GregoryTitus.com

7. Jason Little

Can’t help but want to be a cartoonist now? Learn from a pro by attending one of Jason Little’s special “Drawing for Cartoonists” courses offered at the School for Visual Arts in New York. Little incorporates graphic design elements and technology in order to bring his 3D comics to life. Wanting to contribute to the newer generations of cartoonists he is always eager to speak about his creative processes and share his techniques if you are willing to learn!

BeeComix.com

6. Stephan Pastis

Stephan Pastis is celebrated for his endless awards for the popular comic strip Pearls Before Swine, which you may recognize from your local paper. The hilarious strip features a slew of oddly paired animals. The main characters are a pig and rat whose misadventures with other animals such as a goat, duck, zebra and fraternity of crocodiles are never-ending. Pastis’ sarcasm shines through his work making the famed strip not only comical but clever and engaging.

StephanPastis.Wordpress.com

5. Jeremyville

In case you were wondering, Jeremyville “is an artist, product designer, animator and human.” Sorry, no robot cartoonists here. For all who seek one-of-a-kind products this strange land known as Jeremyville has it all. Side note – If you are in the market for a custom made satchel (referred to as “sketchels”) check out his latest designs. Also for some light-hearted reading his latest book is entitled Jeremyville Sessions, featuring collaborations with other well-known illustrators. He has worked with too many clients to name but just to throw a few out there, Converse, MTV and Coca Cola top the list.

Jeremyville.com

4. Bob Staake

Step into the colorful world of Bob Staake’s lively animations. As the illustrator for more than 42 children’s books and winner of the 2008 best cover for The New Yorker, Staake has had his hands full with requests for his abstract masterpieces. Barnes and Noble recognize Staakes’ work as “exuberant and hilarious,” while his praises are just as endless as his clientele, the illustrator stays grounded in his 200-year-old home in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

BobStaake.com

3. Celia Calle

Representing for the ladies of illustration Celia Calle turns things up a notch in the heat department. Her out-of-this world drawings could be explained by the fact she was “born in Boston, MA, raised by aliens.” Immigrants or real UFO traveling aliens – you decide. Her inspiration is taken from fashion and underground music and fuse together to create surreal graphic art. This highly sought after illustrator has worked with brands like Pepsi, ESPN and Coors on special projects.

CeliaCalle.com

2. Matt Groening

I can’t leave out America’s favorite dysfunctional cartoon family that started it all. An all time classic in its own right The Simpsons is the longest running animated series EVER. Who can resist the antics of Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, baby Maggie and the rest of the gang? It’s no wonder with the success animator Matt Groening has experienced he hasn’t let it go to his head – well not completely. He also created the hit cartoon, Futurama, and it is safe to say he will retire very comfortably. While his own site is currently under construction visit the Simpsons site for more animated thrills.

Without even realizing it you have seen Khary Randolph’s feats of genius in epic pieces such as Spider-Man, X-Men, Boondocks and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Currently he works as Lead Character Illustrator for 4Kids Entertainment, but compared to his impressive list of clientele this gig is only the icing on the cake. Can’t get enough of his animations? Check out his latest cartoon Saturdays mornings on the CW, Chaotic, also an online card game.

As tiny tots little did we know toys such as the Glo Worm and Lite-Brite paved the way for a world of artistic expression. From lava lamps to fiber optics, light has infinite possibilities. The following artists have devoted their careers to using light forms as mediums. So what are you waiting for – grab some glow sticks and get your light art on!

Check out what comes to light…

Light Sculptures, 1980-1984
By: Eric Staller

Eric Staller, the man who started the phenomenon that is Light Art has work that dates back to the 70’s. Staller gave life to his masterpieces by using fiber board and thousands of computerized Christmas lights. “I was interested in transporting the viewer to a hypnotic, dreamlike place. Visitors to my shows remarked on the calming sensation of the colored fields of light. For 30 years I have been giving and getting joy with my art,” said the dedicated artist who in his later years continues to showcase his work which has become permanent installations in Japan, The Netherlands, Amsterdam and Michigan.

We Come in Peace
By: Michael Bosanko

Photographer Michael Bosanko is renowned for capturing ghostly, alien light forms which interact with their backgrounds using light painting. This particular series (besides being eerie) is quite comical and fun. A few of the works stand out most like giant spiders crawling on the highway, alien hitchhikers and a skateboarder surrounded by rocks. If you’re just as amazed as I am by how he does this, keep wondering – like a true artist Bosanko never reveals his secrets!

Light Modulators
By: WT Stinson

WT Stinson’s works entitled Light Modulators has been evolving since 1980. His interests are in exploring color, its function and illusionary space. Exploring practical science with artistic expression he reduced his works into simple frames. Depending on what surface it is displayed on the artwork changes color, inspired by the colors found in sunsets and sunrises. Gothic stained glass windows and fluorescent lighting are the key ingredients in these confections.

His career began in 1988 with a neon shop and goal to spread the awareness of neon light work in the art and design communities. Tataryn’s work infuses neon lampworking with Venetian glass blowing. As noted about Tataryn, “he is interested in transformation – how light can transform space, create optical illusions, project afterimages, and alter perception.” This particular piece is made with fiber optics, neon, plastic, wood and metal.

Light Brix
By Helen Evans and Heiko Hansen

This oversized installation that bears much of a resemblance to my favorite childhood toy is far more advanced than something out of a Fischer-Price factory. Each light is touch-sensitive and reacts by either brightening or dimming. The work intends to connect human interaction with a network of electrical impulses, much too complicated for me to try to explain. The geniuses behind this light sensation are the design duo He He. See it for yourself in France!

Throw away the acrylic paint and paintbrush. Who needs them when the earth can be your canvas? These incredible formations are ours to behold forever and the brilliant artists behind these spectacles will keep generations to come gasping in wonderment.

Check out the endless possibilities the earth and our minds hold…

Spiral Jetty by Robert Smithson

In 1970, using black basalt rocks, soil and water, Robert Smithson created a mind-boggling spiral, putting all other shapes to shame. At 1,500 feet long and 15 feet wide it stretches out counter-clockwise into the red translucent water of the Great Salt Lake in Utah. How did this happen you ask? At the time Smithson began, there was a severe drought in the lake causing a low water level. As the water level increased it became submerged and now it can only be seen at times of low water level again.

Effigy Tumuli by Michael Heizer

As one of the original pioneers of earth art, Michael Heizer used inspiration from Native American mound building to create his masterpiece, which only took a mere two years to complete. Each of the five mounds resembles an animal that can be found in the region – a catfish (770 feet long), an insect (685 feet long), a frog (340 feet long), a turtle (650 feet long) and a snake (2,070 feet long). See the massive earthwork with your own eyes it’s located at the Buffalo Rock State Park in Illinois.

Stone Houses by Andy Goldsworthy

Often called “Mr. Natural”, Goldsworthy is no stranger to publicity for his elaborate creations. In 2004 the Metropolitan Museum in New York City invited the British sculptor to create an installation on the museum’s roof-top garden. Using imported stones from Scotland and wood from New England he constructed two domes, 18 feet in height and 24 feet in diameter. The Central Park inspired piece attracted media attention from Time Magazine, The New York Times and the Arts Journal.

Met Museum

Jim Denevan

Thought leaving your handprint or drawing hearts in the sand was impressive? Well then Jim Denevan has a thing or two to show you. At low tide using a single stick, which he finds upon arriving to the beach, Denevan etches freehand drawings into the sand. Depending where his mind takes him the drawings take up to seven hours to complete and stretch over 30 miles. By the time he gets to reflect on what a work of genius he’s created the tide begins to flood the shore with water, leaving nothing. Talk about passion and commitment!

Jim Denevan

The Mud Man and Mud Maiden

Much like a fairy tale, the story behind these strange creations is just as fantastical. The Lost Gardens of Heligan, located in the UK, is where these marvels lay. The garden is a popular destination for those interested in the wonderment of nature. The magical atmosphere of the land makes the movie Pan’s Labyrinth look like it wasn’t even trying!

Heligan

Around the Corner by Patrick Dougherty

Using his master carpentry skills and fixation with nature, Patrick Dougherty turns ordinary twigs, branches and tree saplings into art projects cool enough to make you want to live in one. Dougherty maintains that his works are subtle and are meant to look as if they are just “found” rather than “made.” He also takes into account the growth and unpredictability of the trees as they mature and shift. He has built over 150 works throughout the United States, Europe and Asia.

Not only are they cool to look at but they must be even more appetizing than boring ordinary food. From cheddar cheese to bubble gum – imagine what these artists’ plates looked like at 8 years old!

Check out what a little imagination can do…

Watermelon Sculpture by Tamás Balla

This watermelon sculpture by Hungarian photographer, Tamás Balla, is sure to turn heads. It’s quite interesting how this watermelon man manages to stay up and intact without his eyes falling off. Would you dare eat a watermelon as spooky as this one?
San Francisco in Jell-O by Liz Hickok

San Francisco-based artist Liz Hickok has created a Jell-O empire (literally). To build the molds Liz uses photographs of the city, balsa wood and a foam core then constructs a silicone rubber mold in the shape the model. When this dries she fills it with Jell-O, adding a little food coloring to make it appear more vibrant, and lets it set in. Although a beauty to behold once completed, after a couple of days it gets moldy, which of course she uses as a metaphor for the city’s change. And you thought your Jell-O molding ability was art!

Chewing Gum Sculpture by Maurizio Savini

Artist Maurizio Savini has a fetish for pink chewing gum and he would like to share it with the world. The thought behind the craft is “…chewing-gum reaches in the mind ‘s meanders at a tie with childhood and adolescence, and a light pressure of a future still to be built and dreamt and the slaughterhouse of personal and collective memories of the past which is gone, no one knows where when and with whom.” It is unknown whether he prefers a certain brand – either way pink bubble gum will never be the same!

Never thought I’d see the day food would become fashion. Chef James Parker grew tired of the played out garnishes on dishes and took it upon himself to set out and find an innovative solution. Veggy Art has become the go-to supplier of imaginative centerpieces and garnishes across the world. The company also provides classes to those who wish to learn the craft. If you like entertaining and want to impress your friends and family alike this is definitely a trade to look into!

Mount Rushmore Cheez-It by Troy Landwehr

So famous for his cheese-carved works, Troy doesn’t even need his own web site or blog. Simply search his name on the web and pages upon pages of buzz over his many curdled works appear so take your pick! From USA Today to Letterman, Troy may be modest but isn’t a stranger to the limelight. He is known for his massive cheddar cheese replicas of the Statue of Liberty and Mount Rushmore (pictured).

As tempting as it may be, don’t even think about trying to ride in this miniature Formula 1 car. Cake maker Mike McCarey is the brilliant mind behind this operation and boasts celebrity clientele, as well as businesses. He is also available to the public. If you can dream it then he can make it into a scrumptious cake!

“Transformers, robots in disguise!” This cartoon is nothing compared to the new school renditions! Proof that there were awesome action sequences long before HD came around. Eat your heart out, Shia LeBouef and Megan Fox; you can’t beat a classic!

Heathcliff makes Garfield look like a softie. Heathcliff had a secret hangout at a junkyard where he would eat stolen fish and swoon over his feline girlfriend. He was street savvy, smooth and always talked his way out of trouble. By the way he was also in some kind of cat street gang, not a good look for today’s cartoons!

5) Beauty and the Beast

This movie brings back so many memories! Back in the day, I used to have one of those talking book thingies of Beauty and the Beast. I even had the French version of the movie on VHS and used to watch it (even though I barely understood what they were saying). Oh yeah, and the Burger King toys, too. But as the end, when Belle finds out that the Beast is dead, in some strange magical way, her tears bring him back to life and “they live happily ever after”.

4) Cinderella

Isn’t every other movie based somewhat on Cinderella? You know, the whole rags-to-riches story where the main character wished for a better future and eventually got it. As a matter of fact, many success stories are Cinderella stories. Now I’m all for the the Cinderella story and the under dog coming on top against all odds, but I was not happy when the New York Giants beat the formerly undefeated New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII by 3 points. Now, I love New York, and represent New York and everything, but I was rooting for the Patriots in that game and–Anyway, Cinderella is definitely a wonderful classic movie that leaves you feeling warm and fuzzy inside.

3) Aladdin

Aladdin. Who could forget Iago and his annoying voice? Or Genie and his goofy ways? Or Jafar and his plot to kill Aladdin and marry Jasmine? I remember the song ‘A Whole New World’ being stuck in my head for months after watching the movie on VHS. The Aladdin video game was also a classic. (For all you former NES gamers, relive the memories by playing the Aladdin Game online).

2) Hercules

Hercules was one of the coolest movies I’ve ever seen in my childhood. Zeus, Hades, Pegasus; all of those cool Greek Mythological characters were in it. Every 7 year old boy had to love this movie when it came out. What kid doesn’t want to see a a muscular guy with armor and a sword run around chopping off the heads of viscous monsters and winning the girl at the end? And the action figures let you relive the movie any time you wanted to.

1) The Lion King

This movie must be one of the greatest movies of all time. For those of you who didn’t know, the story of The Lion King was inspired by Shakespeare’s play, Hamlet. Lion King was about….do I really have to explain what Lion King was about? Everybody watched it. And if you didn’t watch it, you were either living under a rock or were born after 1995 (which still isn’t an excuse). You gotta love the opening of the movie, with ‘Circle of Life’ playing in the background, and all of the animals of the jungle coming together for the ceremony of newborn Simba. And you can’t forget the part when Scar pushed Mufasa off of the cliff (the part where everyone cried). Oh yeah, and then at the end, it was cool to see Simba push Scar off of a cliff during their final duel, and have the hyenas turn on Scar and kill him. Ahh…Lion King is the best.

Whether you supported Obama or not, you gotta admit that his victory in the presidential election was one of the greatest moments of all time in U.S. History. My eyes were glued to the TV while watching the polls to see who’d win the election. My whole family was happy that Obama won, and my mom was dancing and clapping (you shoulda saw her). Things just felt magical on that day. A few days before Obama won the election, we “predicted” his victory in our article Coolest Obama T-Shirts.

Obama Inauguration

A few months after Obama’s victory was his inauguration, the day when he was sworn in as 44th president of the United States. It was a day of celebration. The parade was wonderful and Washington had over a million visitors to witness this historic event. But people were also paying attention to things like Michelle Obama’s outfits and the performances at the inaugural ball. I found it cool that Jay-Z actually performed there, and Nick Cannon was the dj.

Wall Street Meltdown

It’s pretty ironic how I took this image of the Wall Street bull when I’m talking about the Wall Street meltdown. It sure ain’t no bull market now! Since the start of 2008 (possibly earlier as some people are saying) America has been sliding into a recession. The stock market goes bad, then the housing market goes bad, then the auto industry “Big 3″…what is going on!? Obama and his team are doing what they can to fix the economy with the nearly $800 billion dollar stimulus bill. I believe in a time like this, the government does need to intervene and help…but what the hell are those AIG guys doing! ?

Chris Brown Assaults Rihanna

Now I’ll admit, I’m more of a Chris Brown fan than Rihanna, and you can still catch me listening to a song featuring Chtis Brown like ‘Stuntin is a Habit’, but I still think what Chris Brown did was just disgraceful. Yeah, she shouldn’t have thrown your car keys as some reports stated, but you didn’t have to go all out on her and leave her unconcious. Weeks after the incedent, there have been rumors of Chris and Rihanna getting back together and even getting married at Diddy’s house. Now, nobody knows the true story of what happened, but I think Chris did beat up his girl. But I hope things work out some way.

OJ Simpson Finally Gets Arrested

I was like 5 years old when that whole OJ Simpspn trial was going on but I still remember the court cases shown on TV. I din’t really know much about what was going on at the time. As I heard more about the trial and the OJ case years later, I realised that OJ had to have actually killed Ron Goldman and Nicole Simpson. Then OJ has the nerve to come out with a fricken book called “If I Didi It”, explaining the “fictional” account of how he murdered them? Now OJ isn’t getting arrested for that case back in 1995 (in which he was found not guilty). He gets arrested for armed robbery and kidnapping in a Las Vegas hotel and is sentenced to 33 years in prison. Finally!

ORTABLE SEARCH ENGINE (WRIST GPS)
This gadget works as a portable GPS navigator and search engine and it all fits on your wrist! On top of that, its also an MP3 player! Instead of looking at your wrist for the time, you can look at your wrist when your looking for how to get to the nearest Thai food restaurant. All you have to do is activate the touch screen, search for restaurants in the town your in and you‘ll get the addresses and directions to different restaurants.
WRIST GPS

iPHONE
I’m sure everybody knows about the iPhone by now. This phone is one of the coolest ones out there to date: It has a touch screen with full internet access, a keyboard, mp3 player, you can watch TV on it, play games, instant message, 3 Giga byte of space, GPS navigation, a scientific calculator…basically everything a phone needs. I mean, it’s not even just a phone; it should just be called the “all purpose gadget”. If there’s some feature that the iPhone doesn’t have now, you better believe that Apple is going to add some new feature (or come out with an iPhone that’s 10 times better) in the near future.

iPHONE

OAKLEY THUMP 2
These sunglasses from Oakley double as a portable mp3 player. So when it’s a sunny day and your sitting back and enjoying the sun you can listen to some tunes while you’re at it. Whether you want the model that holds 256 MB or 1 GB, this is definitely something that those obsessed with music should get since its probably the easiest way to privately listen to music on the go. And you’ll just feel cool when somebody asks “can I listen to your iPod?” and you give them a pair of shades.

(TOKYOFLASH) SHINSOKU
This is one of the coolest watches I’ve ever scene! It’s probably hard to tell time one it, but when you have a cell phone, who cares? This watch has a special way of displaying time through the arrangement of lights. Anybody who’s into urban fashion should get this watch to add to your style.

LG 8” PORTABLE DVD PLAYER
This DVD player right here is great for keeping you entertained on the road. It’s small, yet the screen is pretty big for its size, with the controls at the side of the DVD player. And it doubles as a digital photo frame when you’re done watching a flick, you can view some pics.
