With prom coming up in high schools across the nation, students everywhere are getting ready for the big day. My sister already went to her friend’s junior prom and she loved it! Although you’ll probably get kicked out of the prom for wearing one of these t-shirts, I thought it would be cool to showcase some t-shirts with the prom theme anyway. Hey, maybe you could get away with wearing on of the tuxedo t-shirts; I never tried wearing it to my prom. Have you?

Popeye the Sailor is a fictional hero famous for appearing in comic strips and animated films as well as numerous TV shows. He was created by Elzie Crisler Segar, and first appeared in the daily King Features comic strip Thimble Theatre on January 17, 1929. 80 years ago, before there was Tarzan, Hercules or Superman, there was a sailor that loved to eat his spinach. Which got many people to eat their green veggie, to be strong like him.”When I was a kid I always liked him eating spinach, the music behind the stories and him bopping Bluto … I liked the excitement and the unpredictable-ness of the plot,” says Fred Grandinetti, co-founder of the official Popeye fan club. Most of his time he was saving his girlfriend Olive Oyl, from the persistent Brutus/Bluto that had the hots for her. No matter the problem, since 1929, Popeye always saved the day and still saving the day 80 years later. Happy 80th!!

Before I begin telling you about our themed competition winners, I first have to give you the low down on the South African music scene so it all makes sense.

South Africa has a huge trance scene. The record label that dominates the industry is Timecode Records. They have an annual outdoor party which draws a crowd of around 5000 people. Their DJs are always in high demand locally and internationally. Springleap had a themed competition to see who could create the official t-shirt for the trance season.

Partying alongside Timecode this season with her winning design ‘Binary Heart’ will be Louise, AKA “Cheez”, from Tinto Designs
Our other themed competition was for rock chick Louise Carver. She has been on the South African music scene since age 15. She is well known in South Africa and is currently making a name for herself in the UK.

She coined the term “organic rock” so we thought we would put it out there to our designers to design a t-shirt for her latest single “Home”. Louise choose ‘Saved by the Moonlight’ as her favorite, and designer Daya Heller will present her design to Louise Carver at her next concert in front of the entire audience.

Shaun from Novolution Studio was the runner up with his designs ‘But I’ve Got to Get Home’ and ‘I love S.A’. So talented! We were really amazed by the quality of designs that came through.

Our next themed competition is for controversial radio DJ, Gareth Cliff and his girls, can’t wait to see what the designers come up with here because the prize will be the very sort after V- festival Tickets.
